Adaptive Mouse

This is a mouse that my friend and I made for another one of my friends named Michael that has a deformed right hand. Michael has ectrodactyly and I noticed that because of this he had much difficulty using a conventional mouse, so my friend and I decided that we may as well make a mouse that fits Michael's hand so he'd have an easier time using his computer. My friend and I designed multiple different designs in fusion 360 but at the moment this one seems to fit michael's hand the best. The U shape at the back of the mouse is so his wrist can help stabalize his mouse movements, the hole shown is mirrored to the other side of the mouse as well and those are meant to be the right and left mouse click buttons. They're oriented in the way they are to allow Michael to more easily click with his right hand, which has an easier time opening and closing rather than going up and down. Inside is the circutry of a mouse that my friend and I took apart.

Creation Process

1st Design

Our first design was created with the intention of giving the user the closest thing to a sleek and clean design, but we soon found that the model didn't have enough room for the circuits of a mouse to fit below, and it was hard to move the mouse around for the user.

2nd Design

The second design was designed with the intention of creating more room for the circuitry to fit inside the body of the mouse, while also giving the palm a good amount of support.

The design ended up failing due to the palm support being too small for the user to rest their hand on comfortably, while also using the mouse.

3rd Design

The third design accounted for the palm resting issue, and the the new wrist support made movement of the mouse easier, but we later found that the buttons' location was too far downards making it hard to grasp onto and click into.

Final Design

This final design has an elevated button platform to ensure that clicking the buttons will not be a difficulty for the user. This design also has a bottom platform with "horns" that create a place for the buttons to attach to on the inside of the mouse

Circuitry

We took apart an old mouse in order to use its buttons and circuit board for our new mouse design. This way we would better understand how a mouse works, and we would be able to reuse and recycle parts that would have otherwise been thrown away. We took the right and left click buttons, and resoldered them onto some wires in order to put them in a different location.
